Huejotzingo Convent and ChurchSan Miguel of Huejotzingo town is original Prehispanic Military Kingdom which was in constant conflict against the aztec empire in order to preserve its Independence.  With the arrival of the first ever Twelve Franciscan Missionaries  to Mexico, who started out a gigantic cultural work in the New World, Huejotzingo was one of the first four locations chosen for their mission.

The franciscan church, dedicated to the Archangel Michael, preserved one of the few original Altarpieces of its time as well the Posa Chapels at inner court's corners.

On othe hand, San Andres Calpan town is located next to the Ixtaccihuatl volcano and it's famous for having one of the original 16th century franciscan monateries of Mexico and where the franciscan built a church to honor the First of the Apostols, Saint Andrew.

Huejotzingo Posa Chapel The franciscan knowing the artistic skills of the local native they commissioned natived artisans to make the carved stone decoration of the Posa Chapels of the Church's inner court (atrium).

The result was an outstanding example of 16th Century Mexican art and architecure. The construction of corner chapels at the inner court and exterior columns in the monastery as well are excellent examples of the cross-bleending between the european technique and native skilled people.

Calpan Posa ChapelsDespite of having Posa Chapels in Huejotzingo Franciscan Church's inner court (atrium) the ones located in Calpan Town Church's atrium really deserve a visit because its excellent preservation as well the religious topics explained on their side walls.

The construction of corner chapels at the inner court explain scenes of Gospel where the oustanding characters are  Christ, his Mother Mary, the Angels, Souls and Franciscan Motives.

  

   Museum of the Evangelisation Minimize

Museum of EvangelisationThe original franciscan monastery became a National Museum of the Evangelisation. The monastery spaces are open to the public in order to admire the exquisite depicted murals on the walls with religious motives. As well you can study objects that describe the titanic labor performanced by the Religious Orders during this movement for more than 450 years. It is worth a visit.
